Public School is a menswear brand born in 2008 in New York, USA, led by Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne, two native New York-type men. The brand name “Public School” comes from the fact that the two also attended New York public schools when they were young, and the two natives of New York have always been inspired by the humanistic atmosphere there, so the brand has the cultural heritage of the New York metropolis.
Public School’s slogan is “Find the Perfect in Imperfection”, the design combines fashion, music, art and pop culture, and skateboarding, punk, hip-hop, these street cultures also deeply influence the two designers, so that the brand men’s clothing has a mix of street style and sports elements and High End, exquisite tailoring design treatment, emphasis on layered collocation, while keeping it simple and neat. However, the brand is more deeply rooted in the DNA of New York, which is not only reflected in the fact that the two managers are from New York, but also that all the design and production of the brand are in New York.
Dao-Yi Chow was born in Queens, New York, and Maxwell Osborne is from Brooklyn (a borough of southwest New York), where they first met while working at Sean John, a New York menswear brand, and although Dao-Yi Chow was vice president of marketing and Maxwell Osborne was just an intern, they quickly found a common fashion taste and formed a deep friendship. They used to say that PuffDaddy Sean Combs combined street fashion with haute couture very well, which also had a great influence and guidance on their menswear design.
In 2005, Dao-Yi Chow began to build his own personal brand in Miami Beach (a city in southeastern Florida, USA), which can also be counted as the predecessor of Public School, which was not successful, and then Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne co-founded the brand Public School in 2008.
In 2010, Public School was selected as the only menswear brand to be selected for the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) “Fashion Incubator” development project, which aims to cultivate talented and competitive young designers and brands in the American fashion circle. However, shortly after joining the project, Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne chose to close their brand business, which was of course very unexpected, but the two designers said that the brand needed to be recalibrated and revitalized now. In 2012, they finally returned with the brand Public School.
In June 2013, Public School won the CFDA Fashion Awards Swarovski Menswear Award. In November of the same year, he won another $300,000 prize from the annual CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund.
Public School × Generic Man Spring/Summer 2014 footwear collection
In early 2014, Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne designed a custom edition of the NFL helmet for the upcoming Super Bowl, which was auctioned at an auction at Bloomingdale. The overall outer layer of the helmet is surrounded by black smooth leather, including the stripes in the shape of the middle spine.
In the spring and summer of 2014, Public School partnered with Generic Man to launch a new co-branded shoe collection. Generic Man plays an important role in the Public School, and the shoes at the spring/summer 2014 collection launch were produced by Generic Man, so the manufacturer officially put two of the designs into production, bringing two designs of high-barrel High Top and low-barrel Creeper leather shoes. The design style echoes the high-end street style advocated by Public School, in addition to the high-quality leather, the black and white tones also echo the brand’s spring and summer clothing.
In February 2014, Public School unveiled the brand’s first womenswear collection at New York Fashion Week, which included menswear throughout the show. Designers Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne said that their women’s clothing does not want to create a boy’s girlfriend, but to design a “tomboy” with a masculine atmosphere, so their first women’s clothing collection is designed in the style of menswear, reflecting the free-spirited handsome personality hidden in the woman’s body.

On June 2, 2014, the 2014 CFDA Fashion Awards concluded with Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne, Creative Directors of Public School, winning the Menswear Designer of the Year. In July 2014, Public School won the International Woolmark Prize in the menswear category of the United States, receiving $50,000 and was invited to participate in the finals.
Today, Public School is available in Bloomingdale’s, Barneys, Saks Fifth Avenue, Harvey Nichols, Isetan, Odin, MaxField, Louis Boston. In Chinese mainland, you can buy it at Salon by Surrender menswear at the Hotel 12 Hengshan Road, Xuhui District, Shanghai.
