Marriott International will eliminate disposable vials of toiletries worldwide

On August 29, Marriott International (NASDAQ: MAR) announced that it will continue its 2018 initiative to replace disposable toiletries bottles of shampoo, conditioner and shower gel in guest showers of five of its hotel brands, including Courtyard by Marriott, SpringHill Suites, Residence Inn, Fairfield and TownePlace Suites.

The new large convenience bottle will reduce plastic pollution and the “push-to-click” design is convenient for guests

It is reported that the capacity of ordinary large compression bottles is equivalent to about 10 to 12 disposable vials. Vials are usually not recycled and are thrown into hotel bins, where they do not fully decompose even when they enter the dump. The choice of large compression bottles can not only ensure the demand of different guests, but also can be recycled like plastic soda bottles.

“This is the second global initiative we have launched in just over a year to reduce the use of single-use plastics, while also demonstrating the importance we place on finding all ways to reduce the environmental impact of our hotels. This is a top priority for us,” said Arne Sorenson, President and CEO of Marriott International, “Guests expect us to make a difference and make a significant contribution to protecting the environment without sacrificing the hotel’s quality service and experience.” ”

Marriott International, which has more than 7,000 hotels worldwide, has replaced disposable vials of toiletries at approximately 1,000 hotels in North America since 2018, with other hotels expected to complete replacement by December 2020.

According to reports, the announcement expands Marriott International’s plan in early 2018 to replace disposable toiletries bottles under five brands of Courtyard, SpringHill Suites, Residence Inn, Fairfield and TownePlace Suites with large compression bottles. Prior to this, Marriott International’s Aloft, Origins, Four Points by Sheraton and Moxy have all been replaced, and a fifth brand of AC hotels is about to be replaced. When fully implemented globally, the initiative is expected to avoid about 500 million vials (equivalent to 1.7 million pounds of plastic) of plastic waste each year, reducing the use of convenient plastics by 30%.

Marriott International’s commitment to sustainability goals also includes research into ways to reduce other disposables in guest rooms, a 45% reduction in waste to landfill by 2025, and responsible sourcing of guest room amenities. Thirteen months ago, the Group launched its first global plastic reduction initiative, focusing on single-use plastic straws. Since July 2018, all Marriott hotels have phased out single-use plastic straws and stirrers and offered alternative products on demand. As of last month, about 1 billion plastic straws were removed each year, a first step toward reducing Marriott’s reliance on single-use plastics and other single-use items. Marriott International officials say these goals, along with other sustainability programs, will help reduce Marriott’s global environmental footprint.

With the improvement of environmental awareness, people pay more and more attention to green consumption and sustainable development. This awareness will also drive more and more of the hotel industry towards green development. Not long ago, international hotel management company InterContinental Hotels Group also officially announced that it is gradually switching to large bottles of toiletries in its nearly 843,000 guest rooms around the world, and is expected to complete the replacement of all its hotels in 2021.
